While these chemical agents have assisted greatly in the apprehension of violent suspects, rioters and lone attackers, their effects can be dangerous in many ways. Permanent damage can be caused to the suspect, which in turn, can drive up costs to departments and government agencies by litigation. They can sometimes cause medical emergencies such as allergic reactions, respiratory distress, cardiac arrest or blindness, as well as more common reactions including shock, panic attacks and nausea.

Also, they can be hazardous to the person using them, through common problems such as “blowback”, when wind blows the chemical back into the user, inadvertent contact, accidental discharge, direct assault, cross-contamination and reactivation on clothes or other objects. Users must be prepared to assist in neutralizing the effects of these chemical sprays after exposure.

BioShield® is a neutralizing wash made to combat the problems sometimes associated with the use of OC, CN, and CS chemical agents. BioShield® is a highly-developed cleansing solution used to facilitate decontamination ON-SITE. BioShield® is sprayed directly onto the face and hair of the affected person. A paper towel is then blotted (not rubbed) on the face area, repeating until the effects subside. It is also necessary to spray objects, clothing, car interiors, etc. to prevent cross-contamination and reactivation. Although Bio-Shield is effective when used to treat small areas of contamination it is not recommended as a cleaning agent for large areas such as entire rooms or crime scenes
